Initial Aesthetic Plans

My aim is to create a clean and simple table design. I don’t want the table aesthetics to outweigh or detract from the musical interface and interaction. I did a quick sketch of my initial Aesthetic thoughts using Google SketUp. I will include pictures of the actual progress and SketchUp files once the building process begins. The following design is not set in stone, but will be the basis as I start the building.

Hi, I am currently working on a interface similar to this for my UG work, and was curious as to the placement of your camera in conjunction with your projector? do you use a mirror to widen the camera field of view, and if so do you us a separate mirror or the same mirror as the projector? My table is circular and I am having concerns about the placements. Unfortunately I am the only person in my entire college that is doing anything like this so no help from anywhere is available here.
Hi Eric,
I’m using one mirror for the projector like in the picture, and then a wide angle lens 90degrees on the camera. So I’m actually not using a mirror for the camera. Depending on the angle of your camera and the height of your table, you may have to use a mirror. Normally the same mirror the projector is using would be fine. You could probably mount the camera on top of the projector in some way so that it uses the same mirror. I’ll get you a picture of my inside setup very soon. There will be a bunch of new hardware updates when I get the chance since my table is now pretty much completed.
If you’re not already familiar with nuigroup, I’d really recommend coming over to nuigroup.com forum where a bunch of us are building these tables and sharing information. =)
hi, i noticed the that you made the schematics in Google Sketchup. Could you please post the the sketch up files online. They’d be be helpful.
Thanx
Hey, I noticed you mounted (or want to mount) your projector nearly vertically…I’ve heard some people say that this is really bad for projectors, have you had any problems with bulbs burning out, etc?
Hi Jason,
Yeah, it’s not really recommended to mount vertically due to the heat flow from the projector. If you redirect the heat or put fans around the projector it should be ok as long as you’re not operating more than 3-4 hours at a time. I have a fan directly in back of the hottest part on the projector (where the bulb is) and have had it on for about 4 hours without it giving a heat warning.
Is there an howto for building the table with all the details?
@ Dade: If you visit nuigroup.com you can see a large group of people building these and find more information there on the forum.
Hello Cerup. Nice setup, I made my own mini box like you have done in the tutorial, and I’m ready to scale up too. How big exactly is this gonna be? Mine will be 10″ x 20″ and its gonna have to be pretty tall, since the webcam doesnt have a very wide angle. Also, I have a $40 logitech webcam, and the frame rate at 30 is still kind of skippy, laggy. Do you think with a higher webcam like yours it will perform better? (how much was yours and where did you get it?)
I used a piece of plexiglass called “Lexan”, which me and my dad bought from Lowes, its a nice piece of plexi, it has 2 sides, one a smooth white surface, and the other side a kind of foggy glassy surface. (tell me if you want, ill give you pictures) You should try using that on your final one, you can peel off either side you wish, but the white smooth texture one would be perfect for it. It works great.
Also I like the software you have made, the photo app and also the multikey, please make some more. But on the “Ripples/Fire” one, the top left corner says “TUIO Socket not found”. Does the windows mouse driver need to be installed or what? Sorry for all the questions haha.
I think this does it for now, please reply. I’m 14 but I’m real good with computers, and this multi touch is awesome.
Feel free to email me also: jrdillard94@yahoo.com
Thank you very much!

Hey Jay… I would really would reccoment getting the Phillips camera from WalMart..
It just works very well
I have used for past year.
Hey Gui, are you in the nui group aswell? Im looking at the prices right now, and its $60, it would be kind of hard for me to make that. Im thinking about doing another prototype (my 3-4th one) and putting the cam far away. Also on this youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq8xtYMxQyI) he uses tracing paper, which I just now put in, and lighting from the bottom, its propped up between 2 surfaces, and looks like the cam is pretty far, looks like great results.
That phillips cam does 90 fps? WOW, someone said the human eye can only see 30 fps is that true?
Thanks NUIMAN
It could be even cooler if you made it an all-in-one pc… Incorperate a mini-itx computer or set up one of the side like an atx back panel so that you could directly put a motherboard inside and a slot with like a sata slim drive… I could try it myself but I don’t have the funds for a projector
…
Nice work. All the best for your project…
I tried the scale version (Mt Mini) which is slightly (very) inaccurate in the windows mouse driver field of things, thinking of trying the table as the mini box etc is a bit rough and ready. I’m using a Genius Eye110 webcam, am i doing something wrong? I used both baking paper and a4 printing paper. Also my webcam has a very small ‘veiwing area’ ! HHHEEELLLP!
do you have the sketch up file of how you setup your camera?
is it ok for put it on the side of the box? or do i have to put it in the middle?
Hi,
I am building a mini multitouch table. I hooked it up using the new version of the tbeta. I also downloaded the old version of the package for all the games and stuff. The new tbeta works but not the package. I tried troubleshooting but it still doesn’t work. Can you help me with the software?
Hi Ryan,
I’m not sure which package you’re referring to. If you’re talking about the smoke demo and mouse driver, those don’t work with tbeta. On the tbeta website you can find more demos under Flash Clients on the Downloads Tab and on nuigroup.com/forum if you search TUIO Mouse you can find a mousedriver for tbeta (eventually the mouse driver will also be on the tbeta website).
If you’re talking about the flash demos. Make sure you read the getting started guide on the tbeta site (you have to set the global security settings to get the flash applications running correctly).
hello I wanted to know how to attach the projector and the camera to “table”. I built a wooden base hours I wanted to know how to attack these items
Furthermore, I wanted to know where I place the camera thanks
hello I wanted to know if I could give this book to build this gem! XD
