Multitouch Biggie (MTbiggie) – How To

What’s a Multitouch Biggie (MTbiggie)?

A Multitouch Biggie, MTbiggie for short, is a low-cost multitouch table. It can be used for a variety of purposes including: drawing, OS navigation, games, entertainment and more.

I created the Multitouch Biggie to show people how something that seems complicated or ‘magical’ can be made simply and at low cost.

The MTbiggie uses the “Front Diffused Illumination” multitouch technique, with ambient infrared light and a DIY infrared webcam. The MTbiggie is similar to the MTmini, but includes a projected image and infrared webcam (rather than a normal webcam).

The MTbiggie isn’t the most stable and robust setup, but it is the easiest to build. To see other methods of building more stable multitouch displays, view the full multitouch display list.

Parts List

  • 2 chairs (or anything to prop up the acrylic)
  • Piece of clear, flat sturdy material (ie. glass, acrylic, plexiglas)
  • Projection material (ie. printer paper, tracing paper, rosco projection material, etc)
  • Infrared webcam/camera (learn to build one yourself here)
  • Computer (dual core recommended, but not required)
  • Projector
  • Mirror

Total Cost: $400 (using low end projector) – $1000+ (using high end projector) – not counting the computer

How’s it Work and What Conditions are Necessary?

When you place your fingers on the surface, shadows are created where your fingers are placed. The webcam sees these shadows and sends the image to the tracking software which tracks the shadows as they move on the touch surface (paper). Below is a video demonstrating the view of what the camera is seeing and tracking.

All you need is a room with (at least) some infrared light (most lights give off infrared light); a dark room will not work. Even room lighting gives the best results. Lights shinning from multiple directions onto the table gives better results than lights from one direction.

Probably not. It’s hard to say. I would ask if anyone has done this over at http://nuigroup.com/forums.

hey in the video you didnt mention infra red lighting why? can you tell me because i dying to try this and i have all the parts and just saw the diagram showing infrared lighting!

    • http://sethsandler.com/blog Seth Sandler

It does mention infrared light in the video. In the video example, the infrared light is coming from the sun and the environment.

  • Sid

hey i m trying to use in it in my school as its the scince fic day it helds in night there will be no sun light so what should i use? can i make a infra red lighting stand or something?please tell me! if you are on skype please give me your id i want to call you and ask my all difficulties! please!

    • http://sethsandler.com/blog Seth Sandler

Yes, you can buy IR illuminators and shine them on it. If you need more help or have more questions, I suggest visiting http://nuigroup.com/forums

can you please tell me briefly on dollarbro@Hotmail.com (syed babar shah) this is my facebook id too

Can I cover the mtbiggie with like a box or would it get problems due to lack of light. I have attached a picture of my idea. And what is that mentioned of infrared lighting, would normal tube lights work?
And one last thing, does the mac mouse driver have multitouch like the trackpad because the trackpad has multitouch gestures.

    • http://sethsandler.com/blog Seth Sandler

If you want to project on the surface, normal lights will not work unless they also product IR light. No, the mouse driver doesn’t mimic the trackpad. It does single click only. Your image example may work, but I’m not positive. Try sharing it over on http://nuigroup.com/forums and see what people think.

    • Chinmay Patel

How can we make sure that a normal light also gives off IR light?

    • http://sethsandler.com/blog Seth Sandler

You still need to use an IR camera. If the IR camera can see light, then the light is giving off IR.

    • Chinmay Patel

      Ok Thanks! :)

would you take a step by step for me?
I’ll tell you what I did.I connected the projector to PC, I put the projector facing the mirror, reflecting back to the glass, do not have the IR camera, IR cameratransform our as was done in this video.  http://www.gersondiesel.com.br/2010/02/16/transformando-uma-webcam-em-uma-camera-infra-vermelho/.
I have problem of the shadow of my fingers. The environment has to be dark?
the camera must be facing the mirror orglass?
    i need your help.

    • http://sethsandler.com/blog Seth Sandler

The camera doesn’t need to face the mirror. It can face the mirror or the glass. It just needs to see the bottom of the surface. You need IR camera and IR light in order to not see the projected image and only see the fingers. If you need more help, see http://nuigroup.com/forums

  • Vinicius

I have a doubt with infrared leds pocisionador they should be belowor above the glass or reflected in the mirror

    • http://sethsandler.com/blog Seth Sandler

In this technique, the LEDs should be above. In other techniques, below. You can learn more here: http://nuigroup.com/forums
