Multitouch Mini (MTmini) – How To

What’s a Multitouch Mini (MTmini)?

A Multitouch Mini, MTmini for short, is a cheap, small, portable multitouch pad. It can be used for all different purposes including: drawing, OS navigation, multitouch operation, games, entertainment, experimentation, and more. I created the Multitouch Mini to show people how something that seems complicated or ‘magical’ can be made simply and at low cost.

0 Multitouch Mini (MTmini) How To

The MTmini uses the “Front Diffused Illumination” multitouch technique, with normal ambient light (infrared not required or needed) and a normal off-the-shelf webcam (IR filter can still be in place). The MTmini technique is the first step in creating a full multitouch display.

Parts List

  • Box (ie. Cardboard, Plastic, etc)
  • Piece of Clear, Flat Sturdy Material (ie. Glass, acrylic, plexiglas)
  • Paper (ie. printer paper, tracing paper, almost any paper)
  • Webcam (most web cameras will work)
  • Computer (dual core recommended, but not required)
  • Optional:
    • Picture Frame

Total Cost: $5 – $50

How’s it Work and What Conditions are Necessary?

When you place your fingers on the surface, shadows are created where your fingers are placed. The webcam sees these shadows and sends the image to the tracking software which tracks the shadows as they move on the touch surface (paper).

Below is a video demonstrating the view of what the camera is seeing and tracking.

All you need is a room with (at least) some light; a dark room will not work. Even room lighting gives the best results.  Lights shinning from multiple directions onto the multitouch pad gives better results than lights from one direction.

    Hi,
i finished 99% of work for setting up of MTmini.
my problem is there is on invert window is coming when configuring,so only black blobs are coming in rectify window.
is there any solution inform me as soon as possible.

eventhough i found new solution by switched off all lights and focused the torch light on the screen which is alternative for my finger.
so that in rectify window the focused torch light works as blobs.
    it works  yeah(“_”)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but it would not work when the light is on.
i think it will work if the invert window is present,so any on give me the solution for this please.!

Which software are you using? Are you using CCV? It sounds like you’re using touchlib. Make sure you’re using http://ccv.nuigroup.com which has a ‘track dark blobs’ setting.

I haven’t tried to setup the MTV driver in a long time. There’s some nice information about setting up the HID driver here: http://cktouch.com/?cat=1&paged=6

Are there any specifications for the webcam to work? I’m thinking of buying one at $ 10 – $ 20 range, but do not want to unduly compromising quality.

You should go through this tutorial http://sethsandler.com/multitouch/community-core-vision-installation-configuration/ If you want to run some of the SWF demos do this: http://sethsandler.com/multitouch/community-core-vision-flash-setup/
If you want to use the PC mouse, then run one of the mouse drivers listed above (don’t do this at the same time as running the SWF demos though). At all times, the CCV software should remain open. For more information, see http://nuigroup.com/forum

For more help and information, I would recommend going to http://nuigroup.com/forums

You do not need FLOSC. So you can disregard anything that says otherwise. You should be following the directions here for flash demos: http://sethsandler.com/multitouch/community-core-vision-flash-setup/

And here for CCV setup: http://sethsandler.com/multitouch/community-core-vision-installation-configuration/

Anything else can be learned on nuigroup. There’s lots of people that can help you there.

I agree Tony. Unfortunately, I’m so busy with work that I can’t do this any time soon. There’s lot of information on help though over at http://nuigroup.com/forums
